Catching Success

          Catching Success

An article about the toughest position on the baseball diamond

Out of all the positions on the baseball diamond, the catcher position is the hardest. They have to crouch behind the plate all day, get baseballs thrown at them to speeds up to 100 mph, taking foul balls of their hand, hit in the head with back swings, and to get an occasional collision while still coming up to bat 4 to 5 times a game. How do they do it? Take a look at Yadier Molina. He has one of the best arms for throwing at base runners. He can even throw out the base stealers even when his knees are on the ground. He snaps his wrist to get the runner out. Like other catchers, Yadier not only has to be prepared for base stealers but also for wild pitches. He is so good at his job that in 2014 he won the National League Platinum Glove for the best defensive player at any position. Through all this, Yadier Molina still comes through in the clutch for St. Louis Cardinals many times.

Buster Posey is another example of a great catcher. Buster is more on the offensive side than the defensive side. In 2012, Buster Posey won the National League Most Valuable Player award. That year, he batted a league leading .336 average, hit 24 home runs, and drove in 103 RBIs. Buster also won the 2010 Rookie of the Year award and multiple Silver Sluggers. Buster has helped the San Francisco Giants with his defensive skills, too. In 2013, Posey caught a no-hitter by Tim Lincecum against the San Diego Padres. Two years later, he caught Chris Heston’s no-hitter against the New York Mets. On top of that, he has caught 3 World Series titles in 5 years. A part of this is because he and Madison Bumgarner are a key battery pair.

Brian McCann of the New York Yankees is a good example of an all-around catcher. He handles the pitching staff well and he makes them feel comfortable so they can pitch good games. He throws out the average amount of base stealers and has tremendous power. Brian has more than 200 home runs although playing the roughest position on the baseball diamond. A specialty of Brian is his ability to block the split finger fastball. With Masahiro Tanaka and Nathan Evoaldi, he has to that a lot.

The 2014 Most Valuable Players

Mike Trout and Clayton Kershaw are both some of the best players in baseball today. It was no surprise when both of them won the MVP award in their league. Mike Trout has always been an MVP candidate but Miguel Cabrera stole it from him. Clayton Kershaw was the usual Cy Young award winner but has never been in a MVP show. Both of these players had lots of obstacles to go through. Clayton Kershaw had to beat out Giancarlo Stanton and Andrew McCutchen while Mike Trout had to go in front of Michael Brantley and Victor Martinez. Mike Trout hit 36 home runs and drove in a league leading 111 RBIs. He also scored 115 runs leading all of MLB. Mike has also won the all-star MVP award, too. Mike Trout was not as aggressive of the base paths like he used to be only stealing 16 bases. Clayton Kershaw had a great record of 21-3 with 239 strikeouts. Clayton Kershaw also posted a 1.77 ERA. That is really good. Mike Trout was also a very good defender in 2014. Since Clayton Kershaw is a pitcher, he doesn’t get to make great plays like Mike Trout does. Clayton Kershaw really did dominate everybody he saw.

Mickey Mantle Triple Crown

Mickey Mantle was a legendary switch hitter who played for the Yankees. 1956 will be the subject of this article.

When Mickey Mantle stepped up to the plate during 1951, many knew he would create history. A young kid who came from Oklahoma working in the coal mines shocked everyone. He had speed, power, and fielding. But 1956 was when he really broke out.

In 1952, Mickey Mantle took over for Joe DiMaggio. 1956 matched some of DiMaggio’s great years. In 1956, Mickey Mantle won the American League Triple Crown award. The Triple Crown is when one leads the league in home runs, batting average, and RBIs.

2015: Blue Jays Power

Josh Donaldson, Jose Bautista, and Edwin Encarnacion are part of the most feared line up in baseball. The power hitting group hit a combined 121 home runs thanks in part to Josh Donaldson who led the group with 41 home runs. Josh Donaldson would lead the American League in RBIs and runs. As you can see, Josh Donaldson, Jose Bautista, and Edwin Encarnacion are some of the greatest sluggers in baseball today.

Offensive Stat Highlight

Jonathan Villar is leading Major League Baseball in stolen bases. Villar has shown some signs of speed early on. In 2013 with the Astros, Villar swiped 18 bases in 58 games. Villar has stolen 25 bases in 66 games this year.
